We’ve moved into the new house now finally after much messing about, i’m just glad it’s all over now. But along with our new foray into 3 floors living it’s about time i retired our current phone system and upgraded it with new shiny things.
I’ve just bought a 3 handset set of the Siemens Gigaset S450 IP phone. I imagine i’ll do a proper review with pictures when they turn up because there’s nothing on the net about it at the moment. It’s a dual mode PSTN and VOIP handset (proper sip not rubbish skype). This will allow me to select to make a call over the net or over BT which will be great to keep costs down.
reCAPTCHA

Many of you have see the colourful or distorted words around the net which you have to enter to prove you are really human and not some machine trying to take over the world. These are called Captcha’s. The boys over at reCAPTCHA have hit upon a novel idea whereby all this wasted energy can be put to good use.
“reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher.” [more]
Pretty cool eh? Now if there were only a way of getting tea made without all the energy wasted i’d be a happy man.

Sphere itApple TV or Mac Mini?
Thursday, April 26th, 2007
Well it’s been a month of Apple TV heaven. I love this thing! Suddenly all my media content is available where i want it without having to crack open my laptop or sit around in the office looking at it all through a small (albeit nice) 20″ cinema display.
Now i’m about to move house so it make sense to start investigating what i’m going to do about getting this content to other rooms in the house.
I’m guessing though that my only (allowed) option would be to hook up a Mac Mini to the Cinema Display. I can’t really just use an Apple TV since we’d need the morning news in the kitchen (although the BBC News Podcast might fulfill that requirement). The only thing which annoys me slightly is the disparity between Front Row and the Apple TV software. I do prefer the Apple TV interface but there are some nice features missing which front row has. Apple need to merge those together.

Thursday, September 14th, 2006So you’re just minding your own business, trundling down the street on your very own ‘personal transporter’, and what happens? Suddenly your world starts going in reverse and there’s nothing you can do about it! Well that appear to be the story from Segway. A bug in the operating software which “can unexpectedly reverse the direction of the wheels which can cause a rider to fall”.
I guess lets all hope that the bug isn’t time based too. Can you imagine the panic in the streets as pedestrians take flying leaps onto the nearest road to avoid being flattened by an out of control Segway. Not the mention the poor unfortunate soul holding on for dear life!
The reg has full details on it here.
