In order to get google maps to orient the map to your current direction, simply hit the GPS fix button again. It’s not very well documented but simple when you know how.

Tom Tom, Co Pilot Live or Navigon Mobile Navigator?

For now I have to say none. I’ve only tested the app from ALK at the moment but with the amount of cash these boys are brining in on a daily basis they could at least do some work! We still don’t have live traffic information apart from Navigon. But then again Navigon can’t even be bothered to theme their screenshots in English!

I do like Co Pilot, mainly because of the price. I’m sure if Tom Tom dropped their price they’d be no stopping them. For now their are in it for the investors.

Unless I’m navigating to somewhere i’ve never been, google have the best solution for giving you what you want. Google Maps is my constant companion for my daily commute down the M62. It’s saved me hours! Come on guys, spend some of that cash making these apps better instead of recycling.

On a side note, the Tom Tom cradle with Google Maps is amazing!

iPhone on Orange

Orange have finally announced their tariffs the iPhone 3GS and i have to say i’m pretty unimpressed. You would have expected them to at least make an attempt to make the deal sweeter compared to o2. They are pretty much equalling o2 price for price on each of the tariffs. Savings of a meagre 11p on the £34.26 (24 month) tariff and 48p on the equivalent 18 month. Makes me hope they include tethering or something like that for free – but you know they won’t.

Come on vodafone – make us smile. The word is out, you know what to do.

Star Defense Review

I’ve always been a fan of tower defence games of which there are many on the iPhone App Store. Star Defence was release last week and it’s flippin’ awesome. I’m totally addicted to it. You have a large variety of worlds and 5 weapon types to use. It does crash occasionally when you receive text messages but generally it’s great. Get it now.

Exsiting O2 iPhone owners will have to cancel to get the iPhone 3G S Upgrade

According to Macworld UK existing iPhone contract holders will be required to cancel their existing

iPhone contracts and purchase a brand new one when the iPhone 3G S is released.

O2 really aren’t going to make a lot of friends with this move. It seems apparent to me that O2 consider the iPhone 3G S a minor upgrade in terms of features which is a really dangerous position to be in. Either that or we can expect this trend to continue when a new iPhone with significant improvements is released in the future.

Having just spoken to o2 i have 3 options with regards to getting my hands on a iPhone 3G S. Considering i renewed my contract on the iPhone 3G release date. There is no free upgrade as everyone knows.

- Purchase the iPhone on Pay as You Go which is £440.40

- Buy out your existing contract which for me would cost £315 (7 months) and then the subsequent new phone price of £96.98. This would be a total of £411.98

- Or wait 4 months which then i would be entitled to o2’s 3 month early upgrade which would just cost the price of the new handset under their current contract deals. £96.98

As you can see o2 have us over a barrel with being the only provider of the iPhone in the UK. Seems to me that the best option would probably be Pay as You Go. Yeah it’ll cost £30 more but save the hassle of canceling.
